Congratulations Poster & Web App Winners

This year's honored recipients are

Ashlyn Haynes, John Pfenenger, and Alex Harper.

The awards for Best Overall Submission & Best Story Map go to

Ashlyn Haynes | City of Springdale

Best Story Map | Category is for the overall experience of a story map. Focus should be on the ease of use, understanding, relevant content, and visual presentation of the data. Any GIS related story map that includes mapped data should apply.

"I created a story map that is like an online walkthrough Springdale. I'm covering what is public, and nothing private. I have 3 sections of the story map application. The first one is public historic sites with a brief history about Springdale, and how each place was shaped.

The second section is covering public attractions such as: parks, trails, and things people can do around town. The last one is covering the Art in Springdale. I have went around and taken pictures of the murals downtown that I could find. I have each artist that they were by, and if it was listed their social media. I also have an interactive map layer showing location points of everything in my story map application with pop-ups at each site. I have created a Geo- form for suggestions to be added to the story map."

The award for Best Cartographic Design goes to

John Pfenenger | Central Arkansas Water

Best Cartographic Design | Category should focus on the visual presentation of the map. This category can show the data and analysis process but the theme or focus will be the cartographic principles and presentation of the map.

"This map was created to show the age of mains within the central Little Rock and North Little Rock area. Emphasis was placed on highlighting mains installed before 1970, grouped by decade.

The overall goal was to create a streamlined, simple, yet impactful visualization of the data. These specifications were requested because the map was used in presentations to various Central Arkansas Water stakeholders. The map was created using PAgis planimetric data overlaid with Central Arkansas Water's main layer."

The award for Best Applied Project goes to

Alex Harper | Central Arkansas Water

Best Applied Project | Category will fit for submissions that focus more on the real-world application of the GIS project. These submissions may or may not include analyzed data but should concentrate on applied use of the results and changes made based on what was learned.

"To provide essential clean drinking water to the community, including those residential water customers whose water was disconnected because of failure to pay their bills, the inaugural CAW-U class on leadership & supervising at Central Arkansas Water (CAW) saw a need to study areas where possible free water- filling stations could be installed in the system.

The idea is that even though CAW is shutting off water to customers for failure to pay, CAW could and should provide safe and clean drinking water to those customers in some way in centralized locations near hot spot areas.

Using disconnection work orders, the team was able to geolocate the locations that had been shut off the previous year. To visualize hot spot areas, ArcGIS Pro was used to generate a heat map. An ArcGIS Online web map and app were then created for everyone to view that shows the 5 locations that met the criteria."
